About Special Olympics New Zealand

Special Olympics New Zealand (SONZ) provides sports opportunities for people with intellectual disabilities throughout Aotearoa and and utilises sport as a vehicle to promote a more inclusive society where people with an intellectual disability are empowered, visible and valued.
With a nationwide network of over 5,000 athletes, Special Olympics New Zealand provides opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities at every stage of their journey. From Young Athletes –a play-based programme for tamariki aged 2–10 – to secondary school-based initiatives and club competitions at local, national and international levels, all athletes are supported to feel included, have fun, and build meaningful friendships.

As a small organisation with a big impact, we live our values of inclusion, excellence, respect, courage, and integrity. Working for Special Olympics New Zealand means being part of meaningful, rewarding mahi that enriches the lives of others and helps build a more inclusive Aotearoa.
“Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”
Kia toa ahau. Ki te kore ahau e toa, kia māia ahau ahakoa ka hinga.
