Discover the Career Journeys of Our Graduates: Insights and Experiences

Evie Brake, Graduate Process Engineer, Tasman Mill, Kawerau: started February 2022

“I am currently a Process Engineer, working alongside the Technical team at the Tasman Mill. I started the Graduate program in February 2022 where I had the opportunity to be involved in a range of projects that focused on improvement and optimisation of the Recovery and Recausticising Plant before moving into the Continuous Pulping Group. I have learnt that the pulp and paper industry can be considered a ‘process engineer’s playground’, where there is the opportunity to work on almost all types of equipment and processes. The more I learn, the more I can identify and work towards solving issues and creating plans to improve different processes.”

Alex Passau, Graduate Maintenance Engineer, Kinleth Mill, Tokoroa: started 2018

“I am a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer working at the Kinleith Pulp and Paper Mill. I began my journey as a summer student in 2018/2019 and have been involved every since. I’m lucky to be part of the team responsible for keeping one of New Zealand’s largest industrial sites running. It’s often said but here, truly, no two days are ever the same. My focus is mainly around plant reliability and improvement, looking at improving machinery uptime while investigating any issues that arise from equipment failures. I have also had a heavy involvement in long-term system changes, with the opportunity to get stuck in with troubleshooting breakdowns. Every day teaches me something new and the satisfaction of solving a problem never gets old.”

Vincent August, Electrical Engineer, Penrose Mill, Auckland: started 2018

“I first joined Oji Fibre Solutions as a summer student a Kinleith Mill in Tokoroa in 2018. Four years later, after completing the graduate programme, I am now working in Auckland as the Electrical Engineer for our Penrose Mill which produces recycled paper. I decided to continue through the graduate programme, as I realised just how much I could learn in one place. From working on turbine generators, electrolysers and boilers, to a multitude of motors and instruments, there are not many places in New Zealand with the same level of industrial variety.”
